Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. This year’s International Day of Peace theme is “Shaping Peace Together”.
This year, the Hawthorne Boulevard Business Association (HBBA), Mt. Tabor Neighborhood Association, Hosteling International USA, United Nations Association Portland, and the Greater Portland Sustainability Education Network (GPSEN) co-hosted the International Day of Peace, with a small gathering and a live stream of:
- A welcome speech and land acknowledgement
- The rededication of our peace poles in their new location: SE 50th and Hawthorne
- Local speakers
- A singing of “Circle of the World,” by Rachel Robinson
- Closing reflection
In addition to our on-line celebration, please support local businesses in their efforts to remain vibrant through the Hawthorne at Home Virtual Street Fair.
Big thanks to our co-sponsor JaCiva’s Bakery, which provided chocolate for our celebration. Yes, JaCiva’s remains open and continues to offer cakes and chocolate during these difficult times.
